The Australian Consulate in Jakarta was bombarded with calls for freedom after the government threatened to revoke visa privileges of foreigners on anti-Indonesian laws.

But no official has publicly explained where the calls originated or whether they were directed at the Consulate. Indonesian intelligence chief Abdurrahman Siti has denied the calls were political attacks on the Australian government or the consul general.

"We haven't received any threats. The calls were probably from our office. It was very strange that there have been such claims but it is normal for us," Mr Siti told the Rupiah newspaper. Mr Siti and his assistant are also responsible for the investigation and prosecution of Indonesians suspected of involvement in terrorism.

Last month the Indonesian government announced new restrictions to prevent foreign nationals from coming to Indonesia. The government's new immigration laws include an "anti-terrorism law that will enable the authorities to conduct an aggressive search of all homes and residences and to monitor all contact with foreigners".

"We have been dealing with [the laws] since January 2016, but there have not been incidents of international terrorism so far," Mr Siti said in January. "However, the new laws could affect us in Indonesia. There are many people who have been killed since these laws were enacted, so they are an important tool to protect our national interests."

Australian officials declined to comment on the claim the calls were against the Consulate, or on whether the consul general was under threats.

However, on May 25, a post on a social media site for Australians under the age of 18 appeared to accuse a foreign guest of terrorism in retaliation for the Australian government's recent anti-Indonesian laws. It says: "If you want to start, then go to your nearest Australian embassy or consulate and send them an anti-Indonesian bill to print".

Under one scenario, the Obama administration would authorize the use of drones and other unmanned aircraft, including unmanned ground vehicles, to hunt and locate oil spills within the continental United States or other targets. The Pentagon has a mandate to maintain a large expeditionary footprint in the Arctic, which it estimates could have an annual impact of $30 billion. But it's unclear how big that expeditionary presence would be.
